Conversational Event with Security and Risk Management Specialist Howie Snyder

A screenshot of the event on zoom

Students in the department of linguistics had a wonderful conversation with Howie Snyder, consultant for security and risk management for 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Howie shared his experiences of more than 30-years working in the corporate world in China and Japan in managing high visibility events and using foreign language skills to open doors of opportunity. Students asked about how to network in the corporate world, how to reduce anxiety in interacting in a foreign language and how to reach advanced proficiency. Learning is life long, travel and study abroad, have an open mind about being an outsider, enjoy challenges, put in the time and effort, know what you bring to the table, plan well before leaping into the next opportunity- these are some of the tips shared. Hope we will all get to safely travel and study abroad again. Until then, come to conversation practice and immerse yourself in cultural events! We thank Professor Emerita Jessica Williams, former Head of Linguistics dept., and Professor Charles David, former faculty/student of Chinese classes, for their generous support that funded the event.
