Faculty Win NSF Grant to Advance Open-Access Language Resources
Introduction
Congratulations to Dr. Liliana Sánchez (Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies, PI) and Dr. Gyu-ho Shin (Department of Linguistics, Co-PI), who have been awarded a prestigious three-year National Science Foundation grant for their project, “Collaborative Research: Advancing Open-Access Resources for Languages: Investigating Evidentiality and Focus Features.”
The study investigates the differences in how source of information (evidentiality) and focus are expressed in two South American languages: Cuzco Quechua and Shipibo-Konibo. It aims to generate annotated corpora utilizing the output of natural language processing models. Both goals rely on direct collaboration with community researchers.
By joining their complementary expertise in linguistics and computational methods, Dr. Sánchez and Dr. Shin aim to create tools and resources that not only push the boundaries of language research but also promote greater data accessibility.
Congratulations to Dr. Sánchez and Dr. Shin on this significant achievement!
