Public Lecture: Impacts of Linguistic Diversity on Language Technology
Lectures on Linguistics and Language Series
October 2, 2024
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
This talk looks at linguistic diversity in digital settings, where linguistic diversity covers both (i) the mix of languages that are used and (ii) the internal variants or dialects that are used. First, we map linguistic diversity in digital corpora and then we evaluate the downstream impact such diversity has on the performance of trained models. The basic conclusion is that such diversity causes models to work much better in some contexts and places than others.
