About

Since arriving to UIC in 2016, Carrie has taught across the Spanish basic language, Italian basic language, Hispanic Linguistics, and Linguistics programs. Her research interests include adult second (L2) and third (L3) language phonological acquisition, methodologies in L3 production and perception research, corpus phonology, and acoustic properties of Ln and heritage speech. Carrie's projects to date have explored the role of initial phonological transfer in L3 Italian and Brazilian Portuguese by Spanish-English bilinguals as well as cross-generational unstressed vowel reduction in heritage Spanish populations. Her current dissertation project aims to drive further advancements in the aforementioned areas through the construction and distribution of a multilingual phonological corpus, using a wealth of multilingual production data collected at UIC's Multilingual Phonology Lab. Since 2022, Carrie is also the co-director of the UIC faculty-led summer study abroad program in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.
