Dr. Duosi Meng Delivers Lecture Series on Jewish Refugee Poetry in Shanghai
Dr. Duosi Meng (Senior Lecturer of Chinese) recently presented a four-part lecture series to adult learners in the Knowledge Exchange Program at Governors State University’s School of Extended Learning. The series, Jewish Refugee Poetry in Shanghai (1938–1948), offered participants a unique exploration of the Jewish diaspora in Shanghai during the late 1930s and 1940s through the lens of poetry.
Throughout the lectures, Dr. Meng guided participants in analyzing the works of Jewish refugees, highlighting how their poetry reflects the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures in wartime China. The series also featured a comparative analysis of poetry written by refugees and works by renowned authors in exile, providing valuable insights into the emotional and cultural complexities of displacement.
This lecture series enriched the adult learners' understanding of history, literature, and the broader impacts of cultural exchange during a pivotal moment in world history.
