Jill Hallett presenting research at AAAL 2023
Dr. Jill Hallett (Visiting Lecturer of Linguistics) presented her research titled "“Not the main languages we can use here”: Linguistic libraryscape and changing community needs" at the Annual Conference of the American Association of Applied Linguistics. This research focuses on how the literacy landscape of a public library (hereafter ‘libraryscape’) supports the home languages of students and families in one linguistically-diverse area in Chicago, particularly as it receives immigrant and refugee speakers of languages new to the community. Specifically, it uncovers how community linguistic needs are serviced through the libraryscape and what language practices are present, privileged, and erased (excerpted from author's abstract).
