These courses are taught in a hybrid format consisting of MWF face-to-face class sessions and 15 weekly online learning modules on Blackboard.
JPN 101 – Elementary Japanese I
This is the first course of the four-semester-long basic Japanese language sequence to establish fundamental Japanese skills for both oral and written communication and to develop cultural competence. Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to have simple conversation on their daily lives, weekend activities, likes/dislikes and to read/write simple email and explanatory passages using hiragana, katakana, and approximately 45 kanji characters.
Restricted to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. Seniors considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email lcsl@uic.edu to request approval.

JPN 102 – Elementary Japanese II
Second course of the four-semester program to develop basic Japanese skills for both oral and written communication and to develop cultural awareness and competence through learning various aspects of Japanese cultures.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in JPN 101; or placement.
Restricted to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors. Seniors considered on a case-by-case basis. Please email lcsl@uic.edu to request approval.

JPN 103 – Intermediate Japanese I
This is the third course of the four-semester-long basic Japanese language sequence. In this course, students will work on two projects. For the first project, the students will work in a small group, conduct research, and create presentation slides on Japanese tradition for a life event or a holiday such as a childbirth, wedding, graduation, and Christmas, etc. In the second project, each student will create a travel guide on a Japanese city of their choice.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of D or better in JPN 102; or placement.
