Introductory Language Courses

These 4 hour courses meet on campus 3 days a week. Students will do additional online work to complete the 4th hour.

CHIN 101 – Elementary Chinese I
Are you curious about the Chinese language that’s thousands of years old? Are you curious about the Chinese writing system that evolved from inscriptions on oracle bones? Do you want to read and write Chinese characters than seeing them as squares of ink? Are you curious about how tones work and how tones alone mark different words? Do you hope one day to speak and interact with Chinese people and experience the Chinese culture firsthand? CHIN101 can be your first step toward these goals.

Prerequisite(s): Appropriate score on the department placement test.

CHIN 103 – Intermediate Chinese I
Instructor: Bridget Wang
You’ve got tones, you’ve got many words and phrases, you’ve got your basic grammatical structures in Chinese … Now is the time to put them to work! This intermediate level Chinese course is designed to develop students’ broader communicative skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing standard Chinese. With intensive and interactive exercises, fun practice in real-life situations and many cultural tips, students will gradually build up their competency and fluency in Chinese.

Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in CHIN 102; or placement.

Advanced Language Courses

CHIN / GLAS 209 –  Advanced Chinese Language and Culture
On Campus, MWF 11:00-11:50

Do you want to use the Chinese language you have learned for so many years in real-life situation? This is the course designed for you. Chinese 209, a dual-focus, language and cultural learning course, will explore modern Chinese society through diverse forms of popular Chinese cultures, such as Chinese legends and their modern adaptations, the dynamic urban and rural lives in China in the digital era. You will be able to demonstrate intermediate to advanced proficiency in Chinese via expanded vocabulary learning and practice.

This course is required for the Chinese Minor.
Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in CHIN 104; or placement.
