Programs in Linguistics

The BS in Computer Science and Linguistics is an interdisciplinary major in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science, College of Engineering. Students in the major have full access to the resources and career advising in both the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. The curriculum of the new major combines core areas in Linguistics and core areas in computer science. Different from a traditional major in linguistics or computer science, this hybrid major utilizes the research insights, practical skills and critical knowledge from both disciplines to deepen understanding and application at their interface: through computational tools, we better understand language and communication phenomena; through systematic understanding of how language works, we take a critical, active part in molding computer- and AI aided communication and information processing.

The BA in Linguistics provides students with a comprehensive understanding of language, including its structure and use and the role that language plays in cognition, communication, and society. Combining theories and practical applications, the program aims to equip students with the skills to analyze language, understand the sociocultural context of language usage and change, and conduct research in various linguistic domains. The program also aims to develop critical thinking skills, foster cross-cultural understanding and communication skills, and promote interdisciplinary approaches to the study of language.

If you already have a major that you love, you have the option to add Linguistics as a minor to your major. Linguistics explores how language works as a biological, cognitive, social and cultural phenomenon, highly relevant to speech-language pathology, psychology, language teaching, literacy development, bilingual education, neuroscience, philosophy,  computer science, anthropology, communication studies, professional writing, marketing and advertising, and professional communication (such as healthcare communication, legal and courtroom communication).
